Ohara Hadaka “Naked” Festival - September 23 & 24
Most traditional Japanese festivals, or “matsuri,” involve a degree of excitement, but the absolute spectacle that ensues at the Ohara Hadaka “Naked” Festival makes it one of Chiba’s most anticipated events of the year!
The festival is best known for a practice called “shiofumi,” where minimally-clothed participants feverishly carry portable shrines into the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Traditionally, this is meant as a way to pay respects to the sea, and to pray for bountiful crop and fish harvests.
The shiofumi is scheduled to take place around 2:30 PM on September 23. Then the festivities continue for the remainder of the weekend with crowds parading around the city, still transporting the “kami” gods in their portable shrines, as they pass by vendors selling food and drinks.
Location: Isumi City, Chiba
The shiofumi takes place at Ohara Beach:

3️⃣ Recommended Hiking Day-Trips Outside Tokyo | Chiba Hiking Guide
(Scroll down for details about each hike ⬇️)
If you’re looking to spend some time immersed in nature during your next trip to Tokyo, look no further than across the border in Chiba Prefecture! Sitting on the Boso Peninsula, Chiba offers plenty of options to enjoy beautiful mountain scenery, along with views of both Tokyo Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
The JR train lines run all around the peninsula, making Chiba an accessible destination for some quick day-trip hikes right outside Tokyo. If you want to spend a full day out of the city, consider staying the night and adding a seaside sunrise or sunset to your itinerary too!
Below are three recommended hikes in Chiba, and a link to our website where you can learn more detailed information about each hike:
https://www.visitchiba.jp/things/hiking/
1️⃣ Slide 1: Ubara Utopia, Katsuura City
Difficulty: Casual
Length: 2.3 km loop
Access: An 8-minute walk from Ubara Station on the JR Sotobo Line
2️⃣ Slide 2: Mt. Nokogiri
Difficulty: Casual (cable car & hike) / Moderate (hiking only)
Length: Courses ranging from 1.85km to 3.85km
Access: The trailhead is located about a 10-minute walk from Hamakanaya Station on the JR Uchibo Line, and the Tokyo Bay Ferry terminal
3️⃣ Slide 3: Mt. Iyogatake
Difficulty: Mostly Moderate*
Length: 2km round-trip from the trailhead to the summit*
Access: The trailhead is located just behind the Heguri Hub, an outdoor activity complex which serves as a gateway to the southern Chiba area.
* ⚠️ This hike might be short, but the final climb up to the top of this mountain, known as the ‘Boso Matterhorn,’ might prove too difficult for some. The last section of the trail requires the use of ropes and chains in order to scale rocky surfaces, and wearing durable gloves is recommended. We also recommend you use extreme caution, as a recent accident here resulted in a fatality.
