Earlier this week we went to check out this year’s version of the “Winter Illuminations” display at Country Farm Tokyo German Village. This German-inspired family theme park found here in Chiba transforms to a winter wonderland every year and this season the winter lights will illuminate every night until 8:00 PM (last entrance: 7:00 PM) through April 5, 2026. A nightly drone show will also take place through December 31, 2025. The drone shows will start at 7:00 PM every night from now until December 27 and on December 31, while the December 28, 29 & 30 shows will start at 5:30 PM. The drone show is subject to cancellation due to poor weather.

A traditional musical performance aboard Japan’s flying monorail! I was invited to take part in an experimental tour which took us for a ride on the Chiba Urban Monorail, the record holder for longest suspended monorail system in the world. We were served a bento lunch while aboard, and got to enjoy a shamisen performance while we ate. Local tour organizers are considering making this tour available to tourists in Japan. Two Evening Fall Foliage Spots Near Tokyo
Here are two locations in Chiba where you can enjoy the fall foliage lit up in the evening, just a short train ride from Tokyo.
Photos 1 & 2 show the approach to Tozen-ji Temple in Matsudo City. The lights are scheduled to remain on here during the peak foliage season (past years: Late-November to Early-December) until 7:00 PM.
Photos 3 & 4 show Katsushika Hachimangu Shrine, which will hold a special light-up event and musical performance on November 29 & 30 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The main highlight here is the shrine’s sacred towering ginkgo tree, estimated to be over 1,200 years old.

A Quiet Autumn Garden near Tokyo | Issa Soju Memorial Hall
Last year we took a trip to the Issa Soju Memorial Hall in Nagareyama City and were greeted with these splendid scenes of the fall foliage. We were so impressed with the scenery here that we decided to recommend it again this year before the autumn colors reach their peak. In addition to its charming garden, the property also has historical significance. The Issa-Soju Memorial Hall was established in Nagareyama City to commemorate the friendship between two Issa Kobayashi and Soju Akimoto.
Issa Kobayashi was one of the premier Haiku poets of the Edo period. He was closely acquainted with a mirin producer and poet in Nagareyama, Soju Akimoto, and visited his estate often. Combining both of their names to commemorate their friendship, the “Issa Soju” Memorial Hall was established. The original building dates back to the 19th century, and was deconstructed and reassembled into its current state, along with a garden and tea house.

The height of the fall foliage season varies by region in Japan, and here in Chiba, next to Tokyo, the period of late November to early December is usually the best time to see the leaves showing their autumn colors. Naritasan Park is located in Narita City behind the historic Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple.
Train access: A 15-minute walk from JR Narita Station and Keisei Narita Station, both of which are a short ride from Narita International Airport.

Hondo-ji Temple is a cultural treasure with over 740 years of history, located in the city of Matsudo, which borders Tokyo.
Train access: A 10-minute walk from Kita-Kogane Station on the JR Joban Line

Transfer to the Kominato Railway at JR Goi Station for a unique retro train experience through the Chiba countryside.
