A Quiet Autumn Garden near Tokyo | Issa Soju Memorial Hall
Last year we took a trip to the Issa Soju Memorial Hall in Nagareyama City and were greeted with these splendid scenes of the fall foliage. We were so impressed with the scenery here that we decided to recommend it again this year before the autumn colors reach their peak. In addition to its charming garden, the property also has historical significance. The Issa-Soju Memorial Hall was established in Nagareyama City to commemorate the friendship between two Issa Kobayashi and Soju Akimoto.
Issa Kobayashi was one of the premier Haiku poets of the Edo period. He was closely acquainted with a mirin producer and poet in Nagareyama, Soju Akimoto, and visited his estate often. Combining both of their names to commemorate their friendship, the “Issa Soju” Memorial Hall was established. The original building dates back to the 19th century, and was deconstructed and reassembled into its current state, along with a garden and tea house.

Meeting people like Aoki-san is one of my favorite things about living in the countryside outside Tokyo. Like many who grew up here on the Boso Peninsula, he left for Tokyo to make his living. Eventually though, he returned to his hometown, took over his family’s sushi shop, and then established a bar. He wanted to make use of local products to brew his own alcohol, and when he recalled eating locally grown sugarcane as a kid, he had a revelation to start this rum distillery.
The award-winning Boso Rum, or Rhum de la Peninsule de Boso is made from sugar cane grown here on the Boso Peninsula. It’s brewed at a distillery by Aoki-san, next to his family’s 150-year-old home.
You can find Boso Rum at spirit shops around Chiba and at michi-no-eki roadside stations in southern Chiba, like Green Farm Tateyama and Tomiura Biwa Club. For those passing through Tokyo Station, it’s sold at LIQUORS HASEGAWA in the Yaesu Underground Mall. Aoki-san has future plans to open a tasting room here at the distillery, and partners with a local hotel, Chikura Tsunagu Hotel to offer sugar cane harvesting experiences.

🏃 Attention Runners! Visit Chiba Staff Recommendation:
Tateyama Wakashio Marathon | January 25, 2026
The city of Tateyama is found near the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula where Tokyo Bay opens up into the Pacific Ocean, and has long been beloved as one of the Tokyo area’s most relaxed seaside locations. The city offers numerous authentic Japan travel experiences with its temples and shrines, castle park, flower blooms, fresh seafood and produce, and views of Mt. Fuji.
As a long-term resident of Chiba, I’ve been known to enjoy a run in Tateyama, as it’s one of my favorite spots to admire the sights of coastal Japan. In fact, I’ve joined this marathon myself and had an absolute blast, and would certainly recommend it to all runners living in or visiting the Tokyo area.
Three events are on offer, with a 2km fun run, half marathon, and full marathon. The entry period will last through October 31 using the following English website:

Here at Takabe Jinja, Japan’s only shrine dedicated to the God of Cooking, this Knife Ceremony, or Hōchōshiki, takes place three times per year. Last May, we witnessed Chef Hakushin Nagashima prepare a sea bream while adhering to this centuries-old ritual’s golden rule: he never touches the sacred fish with his hands, not even once. Since the hands are considered impure, the chef employs carefully choreographed maneuvers as to only touch the fish with a knife and chopsticks.
This ritual originated in the 9th century imperial court, but the history of how this shrine came to honor the god of cooking is said to date back 1,800 years, long drawing aspiring chefs and food makers to its hallowed grounds.
The ceremony is held every year on May 17, October 17, and November 23, so you still have two more chances to see it this year.
