Mt. Nokogiri

Sightseeing Spots | Visit Chiba | Latest update:2024/07/18

Come see Chiba from above at Mount Nokogiri–also known as Nokogiriyama, meaning “saw mountain” in Japanese. Centuries of systematic mining operations accentuated this mountain’s "saw-like" profile, and transformed it into a wonderful lookout point. By walking the trails or riding the panoramic ropeway to the top, visitors can spend a day exploring the stone monuments and the unique way in which this mountain was mined for its prized stone, the Boshu Stone. Two massive Buddhist monuments await visitors here: the Hyaku-shaku Kannon, carved directly into a sheer rock face, and the Nihon-ji Daibutsu, the largest sitting stone Buddha in all of Japan.

(Mt. Nokogiri Ropeway: About a 10-minute walk from Hamakanaya Station on the JR Uchibo Line or the Tokyo Bay Ferry Terminal at Kanaya Port.)
