Uchiwa no Ota-ya

Sightseeing Spots | Visit Chiba | Latest update:2023/06/30

‘Uchiwa’ is a convenient and easy to use hand fan that can be seen all over Japan during warmer seasons. Unlike the folding sensu, these fans are round and mounted on a wooden--usually bamboo--handle. Here at Ota-ya, you can buy uniquely designed uchiwa as souvenirs, or even participate in a workshop to make your own! While it may be just a simple fan, the art of uchiwa making is a very traditional and revered craft that has existed in Japan for a very long time. Come try your hand at the craft, and leave with a souvenir that is sure to see a lot of use!
